Vestibular & Balance Disorders

Dizziness, vertigo, or feeling unsteady can make everyday movement feel uncertain. Vestibular balance disorders can affect how you walk, focus, turn your head, or move through your surroundings. Understanding what's causing these symptoms is the first step toward regaining your balance and confidence.

Why Are You Feeling Dizzy or Unsteady?

Your vestibular system, located in the inner ear, works with your eyes, muscles, joints, and brain to help you maintain balance and understand where your body is in space. When this system is not working properly, your brain may receive conflicting signals that lead to dizziness, vertigo, visual disturbances, or difficulty maintaining your balance.
Vestibular symptoms can have different causes, including BPPV, vestibular hypofunction, inner-ear disorders, head injuries or concussions, and other conditions. Some people experience symptoms when turning their head, walking, changing positions, or being exposed to busy visual environments.

Understanding Vestibular Balance Disorders

Not every balance problem looks the same. Some people experience a spinning sensation, while others feel lightheaded, unsteady, or as though their surroundings are moving. Symptoms may also include difficulty focusing, nausea, sensitivity to movement, or trouble walking.

Because vestibular disorders can have different causes, identifying the pattern of your symptoms and how your balance system is functioning is an important part of determining the appropriate approach.
