Why Are You Experiencing Headaches?
A headache can have many possible causes, and the pain doesn't always start in your head. Stress, muscle tension, poor posture, neck problems, dehydration, and other factors can contribute to headaches, while some headaches are associated with conditions such as migraines. The location, intensity, duration, and pattern of your symptoms can provide important clues about what's contributing to your pain.
For some people, tension in the neck and upper body can play a role in their headaches. That's why looking at how your neck, posture, muscles, and movement work together can be an important part of understanding certain types of headache pain.

Headache vs. Migraine: What's the Difference?
- A headache and a migraine aren't necessarily the same thing. Headache is a broad term for pain or discomfort in the head, face, or upper neck, and it can vary in intensity and duration. Tension-type headaches, for example, may feel like pressure or tightness around the head and can be associated with stress or muscle tension in the neck.
- A migraine is a specific neurological headache disorder. Migraine attacks are often more intense and may cause throbbing or pulsating pain, frequently on one side of the head, along with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Some people also experience visual or sensory changes known as an aura. Migraine attacks can last from several hours to multiple days.
Looking Beyond the Pain
When appropriate, treatment may include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, posture and movement retraining, stretching, and education to address physical factors contributing to your symptoms. Your treatment plan is personalized around your symptoms, goals, and daily activities.
If your symptoms suggest that further medical evaluation is needed, we can also help you understand when additional care may be appropriate.
